One star of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might have just teased their involvement in 2026’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios confirmed the first 27 actors cast in Doomsday – the Russo brothers’ next, much-anticipated MCU crossover – at the end of March, which included members of the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. There were some huge omissions, however, that has spurred speculation of another upcoming Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement, but one veteran MCU actor might have teased his returning role already.
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight during the premiere of his and Olivia Colman’s new movie, The Roses, Benedict Cumberbatch teased Doctor Strange’s return in Avengers: Doomsday with a simple, repeated, “I wonder.” This is neither a confirmation nor a denial, but this gives us hope that Strange could have a pivotal role in Avengers: Doomsday. Doctor Strange is central to Marvel Comics’ Time Runs Out and Secret Wars events from 2015, which will heavily inspire Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, so the door is open for Cumberbatch to reprise his celebrated MCU role.
How Doctor Strange’s Role in Avengers: Doomsday Has Been Teased
Benedict Cumberbatch’s new comment suggests that Doctor Strange could easily be making an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. This comes off the back of his comments back in January, where he implied to Variety that Strange would be taking a hiatus in Doomsday. A week later, however, Cumberbatch back-tracked to Business Insider, stating, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.” This, along with his new comment, teases a key role for Doctor Strange in the MCU’s Phase 6, and a number of previous projects have already set this up.
Doctor Strange’s most recent adventure in the MCU saw him travel across the multiverse to protect America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) from the Darkhold-corrupted Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). This has given him an intimate knowledge of multiversal travel, the concept of incursions, and the threat of variants from other realities, which are all suspected to be crucial to the development of Doomsday and Secret Wars. The end of 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness perfectly set the stage for Doomsday, as Strange himself apparently caused an incursion.
Multiverse of Madness ended with Clea (Charlize Theron) recruiting Doctor Strange to help fix an incursion he began. Since incursions are expected to play a key role in Avengers: Doomsday, the fact that Strange himself has caused one could fulfil Earth 838’s Reed Richards’ (John Krasinski) prophecy that “the greatest threat to the multiverse” is Doctor Strange. Recent speculation has teased a partnership between Strange and RDJ’s Doctor Doom, which could transform one of the MCU’s most powerful heroes into a villain, giving Benedict Cumberbatch new layers to explore for Doctor Strange in the coming years.
