Animate Group anime planning and production company Frontier Works, in collaboration with motion comics production company Do-Raku, has kickstarted a new “anime production” label called Animatica. The upcoming Elegy for the Henchmen: Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken: Kenogun Zako-tachi no Banka), an adaptation of a Fist of the North Star gag manga, is the first release from this label.
According to a press release, the Animatica label will offer more “emotional movements” than existing motion comics, and will introduce more effective direction as well as video processing that matches the informational intensity of a scene.
The press release also says that it is using a production method that controls the costs and production time of anime production and presents “the possibilities of new animation styles,” and that there are plans to continue developing new technologies.
The citation of cost and production time is similar to the circumstances surrounding the “light anime” — basically motion comics with a fancier name — of the AnimationID brand, a joint venture between Imagica Infos and Dai Nippon Printing (DNP). Imagica Infos said that the name came from the initiative’s response to “consumer needs” of wanting to enjoy a variety of anime quickly and its desire to deliver lower-cost anime in a “timely” manner.
Also similar to the recent AnimationID light anime, Elegy for the Henchmen: Fist of the North Star‘s social media channels and website use the term “anime” (or “animation”), while “motion comic” only appears in corporate announcements (and is not used to directly describe Elegy for the Henchmen: Fist of the North Star or Animatica’s work).
